President’s Day is celebrated every third Monday of February each year. It pays tribute to all the United States Presidents and their achievements that helped mold our nation into what it is today. The holiday also shares a date with George Washington’s birthday, the first president of the United States of America. Some states also pay homage to Abraham Lincoln on this holiday, as his birthday was also in mid-Feburary.

Although most people believe the US created President’s Day to honor our great presidents, the real purpose of the holiday is to give workers another three-day weekend. During the late 1960s, many politicians believed the extra time off would increase productivity among the working class. In 1971, President Richard Nixon passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, causing Presidents Day, Columbus Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans’ Day to all fall on a Monday. The act made President’s Day a national holiday while giving workers more three-day weekends.

How To Celebrate President’s Day

Many people celebrate President’s Day by brushing up on their presidential history. It is common for schools to plan lessons and events for students about U.S. presidents and George Washington, in particular. Some read about their favorite President’s achievements, while others attend events highlighting the roles of the head of state.

If you’re a George Washington fan, you can always celebrate his birthday by baking a cherry pie or other cherry delicacies to pay your respects to the first US President. Many people equate George Washington with cherries due to the story of a young George Washington chopping down a cherry tree.
