National Missing Children’s Day happens on May 25 every year to help bring awareness of child safety and the efforts to save any child who goes missing. Estimates suggest that 2,300 children go missing every day, and 460,000 are reported missing every year. Luckily, 99.8% of missing children come home. Sometimes, they are lost, there is a miscommunication between family members, or, in kidnapping situations, the hardworking members of law enforcement and private investigators successfully find the child before any harm comes to them.

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan declared May 25 as National Missing Children’s Day, commemorating the day that Etan Patz disappeared in 1979 while walking from home to the school bus in New York City. Etan’s disappearance was the first time a child abduction case was featured in the media and received national attention. Other child abductions between 1979 and 1981 hit America hard and exposed a lack of available resources for finding missing children. Etan was never found and legally declared dead in 2001. His disappearance led to the foundation of the Missing and Exploited Children’s Movement.

How to Celebrate National Missing Children’s Day

The Missing and Exploited Children’s Movement holds an event every year to help educate parents about the Take 25 initiative. It invites parents to talk to their children for 25 minutes about child safety. You can watch a documentary about child abduction or read about it to better inform yourself. Attend a ceremony for law enforcement or other organizations that honors those who dedicate their lives to finding missing children on #MissingChildrensDay.
