The US first recognized Martin Luther King Day as a national holiday on January 20, 1986. However, the push for Martin Luther King Day began shortly after Mr. King’s assassination in 1968. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, numerous bills attempting to recognize Martin Luther King Day as a national holiday went through the US House of Representatives. Still, they failed due to cost concerns for public workers. Many politicians believed it would be too expensive to give US citizens another paid holiday and shot down the bill. On November 2, 1983, President Ronald Regan signed a bill that made Martin Luther King Day a federal holiday. Three years later, the bill successfully passed the House of Representatives, and it became a national holiday in 1986.
