National Defense Transportation Day occurs on the third Friday in May of every year and celebrates and honors the hardworking men and women in the transportation industry. National Defense Transportation Day is a part of the National Transportation Week, which helps bring awareness of the importance of maintaining and advancing our transportation sector. One hundred years ago, it took four weeks to get from California to New York. Today, you can take the train and arrive in 63 hours, you can drive there in just over 40 hours, or you can fly in just under 7 hours. Imagine what it will be like in another one hundred years!

In 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into resolution National Defense Transportation Day. Congress updated the resolution in 1962 to include National Defense Transportation Week to take place on the week ending on the third Friday in May. Each year, the current sitting President of the United States will sign a proclamation asking citizens to recognize and honor the hardworking men and women in the transportation industry for their efforts in keeping our roads, airways, and rail systems operational.
