Memorial Day happens on the last Monday in May and honors the men and women who died while serving in the United States military forces, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. During the Civil War, 620,000 soldiers died on both sides. The number of casualties in war is heartbreaking, and these people perish to preserve our freedoms and liberties. By honoring those who gave their lives while serving in a military branch, you keep their memory alive and remember that freedom is never free.

Shortly after the end of the civil war, May 30 became Decoration Day, where families place flowers on the graves of all soldiers from the civil war. By 1890, most northern states observed Memorial Day on May 30, except for some states in the south who celebrated on a different day until 1968. Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which made the last Monday in May the official holiday for all states.

Unofficially, Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer season. Sometimes Memorial Day is confused with Veterans Day, the latter occurring in November and designed to honor all who have served in the military (vs. those who have died as a result of their service).

How to Celebrate Memorial Day

Traditionally, Americans will BBQ, spend time with family and friends and welcome the unofficial start of summer while remembering the brave men and women who died serving our country. Many retail outlets also have promotional sales during this time.

Most cities will hold parades or commemorative events that you can attend. Commemorators can visit cemeteries or memorials and place red poppies on the graves, representing those who have fallen in war. If you have an American flag, fly it at half-mast until noon, then raise it to full-mast until sundown on #MemorialDay to honor the men and women who sacrificed their all for our freedom.
