Independence Day is on July 4th in the United States every year, celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The fight for independence started over unjust taxation from King George III, beginning with excessive taxes on luxury items like tea and sugar. The British Parliament levied harsher taxes and rules against the 13 colonies when they began rebelling over the unjust taxes. It was clear that England did not care about the colonists' welfare. The Quartering Act and The Stamp Act of 1765 pushed the colonists too far and began the long and hard-fought road toward American Independence several years later in 1776.

On July 3, 1776, John Adams wrote a letter to his wife Abigail detailing how he felt Independence Day should be celebrated. He wrote, “…pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations….” On the first anniversary of Independence Day, Bristol, Rhode Island, fired 13 gunshots in the morning and the evening. The Continental Congress held an official dinner with speeches, prayers, and firework displays in Philadelphia. In 1820, Eastport, Maine, held the first official Fourth of July celebration, and they continue to have the largest celebration in the state every year.

Patriotic displays, hamburgers, hot dogs, beer, and fireworks are the traditional ways of celebrating Independence Day, along with wearing red, white, and blue clothing. During the day, there are parades, concerts, and other events.
