Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th each year, and is the oldest commemoration of the abolition of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth is also known as Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day, and officially as Juneteenth National Independence Day. Juneteenth is the newest federal holiday in the United States, having been officially proclaimed by President Joe Biden on June 17, 2021.

Juneteenth originated in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865 when Union Army general Gordon Granger proclaimed “The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer.“

Although President Abraham Lincoln had officially outlawed slavery on January 1, 1863, there were still certain remote parts of the confederacy where enforcement was slow and difficult. General Granger’s announcement officially marks the end of the horrific institution of slavery in the USA. Today, Juneteenth is a celebration of African-American culture, and emphasizes education and achievement.
