National Airborne Day is celebrated on August 16 every year. In 2002, US President George W. Bush signed it into law dedicating August 16 as National Airborne Day to commemorate the men and women who serve as airborne troops, also known as paratroopers, in past, present, and future wars and humanitarian crises. It also marks the first successful test of Brigadier General Billy Mitchell’s idea of dropping troops behind enemy lines via aircraft. Fort Benning, Georgia, held the first successful “jump” on August 16, 1940. In 1942 during Operation Torch in French North Africa, the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion flew in behind enemy lines – the first time paratroopers flew into active combat and proved the success of their tactics.
There are two airborne divisions in the Army. The 82nd Airborne division is known as the All Americans, and the 101st Airborne Division is known as the Screaming Eagles. The 82nd Airborne operates out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and became active on August 25, 1917. In 1918, they earned the nickname “All Americans” for their wide diversity within their ranks, including several immigrants. The 101st Airborne operates out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and made its first appearance in the Vietnam War on July 29, 1965.

How can you celebrate National Airborne Day? Take a skydiving class with a paratrooper you know, or thank them for their service and keep both feet on the ground. Several cities have airborne museums you can visit, or you can read more about paratrooper’s significant impact on the war. At Fort Bragg, they hold a ceremony honoring the 82nd Airborne division every year on #NationalAirborneDay.
