Susan B. Anthony Day is celebrated on February 15 each year. The holiday honors the courageous activist and all she accomplished for women’s rights.
Susan B. Anthony played a pivotal role in the women’s rights movement during the mid to late 1800s. She fought for women’s suffrage and became a vocal supporter of the American Anti-Slavery Society. Anthony quickly became a prominent feminist leader, spearheading a distinguished national suffrage organization in 1869. Her women’s rights group eventually merged with another notable activist organization, forming the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1890. Susan B. Anthony led the group and even entered the political sphere in the late 1800s. She fought tirelessly for women’s rights during a time very few people accepted women as politicians. Sadly, Anthony died of heart disease and pneumonia in 1906. Fourteen years later, the US Constitution added the Anthony Amendment, giving women the right to vote in 1920. She also became the first American woman printed on a US coin.
