National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is celebrated on the 7th of December. The date marks the Japanese attack on the Pearl Harbor naval station in 1941. Over 2,400 people died in this sneak attack, and it wreaked havoc on the American Fleet. The attack was a complete surprise, as no one believed that either the Japanese or Chinese had the capability of launching such an assault. Yet, ironically, it was this attack that led to America formally joining World War II. Looking at how the war progressed, we might even say that this attack led to Allied victory.

Remembrance Day is an excellent time to remember the onslaught that led to such unnecessary loss of life. It's also a time to honor those brave people who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. To pay homage to them, it's traditional to fly the flag at half-mast from sunrise until sunset on the 7th of December.
