A Blackfoot Indian, Red Fox James, first came up with the idea by riding across 24 states. It was his wish to see a day where Americans honored the native people of the land. At the time, only New York state paid heed to his request, making the second Sunday in May National Indian Day. It was only in 1986 when the issue came up again. This time, however, President Reagan decided on National American Indian Week. President Bush Senior lengthened this to all of November, and in 2008, President Bush Junior declared the 26th of November as Native American Heritage Day, and congress passed the appropriate act.
