Native American Heritage Day falls on the 26th of November. This day honors the vibrant culture of Native Americans and the contributions they make to society. A Blackfoot Indian, Red Fox James, first came up with the idea by riding across 24 states. It was his wish to see a day where Americans honored the native people of the land. At the time, only New York state paid heed to his request, making the second Sunday in May National Indian Day. It was only in 1986 when the issue came up again. This time, however, President Reagan decided on National American Indian Week. President Bush Senior lengthened this to all of November, and in 2008, President Bush Junior declared the 26th of November as Native American Heritage Day, and congress passed the appropriate act.

How to Celebrate Native American Heritage Day

The idea behind the Day is to learn more about Native Americans. You can do this by visiting museums, sites of historical significance, or heritage centers. You may also attend a concert, event, performance, or seminar in which the Native American culture is honored.
