Patriot Day is celebrated every year on September 11 to honor those who have lost their lives in the terrorist attacks in New York City; Shanksville, Pennsylvania; and Washington, DC. It also honors those first responders and others who lost their lives attempting to rescue the victims in the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and who responded to the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in a Shanksville, PA, field.
On September 11, 2001, the Islamic group Al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airliners. It carried out terrorist attacks against the most important buildings in the U.S. Approximately 3,000 people lost their lives, and thousands of others were injured. The loss of life from these attacks reflect the most significant act of terrorism in our nation.
Patriot Day is a special day for the American people. Every year, Americans come together to remember the victims and their families, the first responders who fought bravely, and the officers who had to make difficult decisions. The U.S. flag flies at half-staff to remind everyone that their country remained strong and united in most difficult times.
