National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is celebrated on the 30th of September every year. It is set aside to remind and educate Canadians about the tragic legacy of the country’s residential schools. For more than 100 years, an estimated 150,000 Indigenous children were separated from their families and forced to attend church-run residential schools. While there, the children suffered sexual and physical abuse, neglect, and malnutrition, with more than 4,000 of them believed to have passed away.
In June 2021, the Senate unanimously passed the bill proposing the creation of a holiday for federally regulated workplaces and federal government employees, showing its commitment to reconciliation and ensuring this tragic history and those affected by it are never forgotten.
How to Celebrate National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
There are several ways you can observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. You may choose to learn more about the dark history of residential schools or participate in community-based events championing reconciliation efforts. Some choose to mark the day by celebrating Orange Shirt Day, which also falls on the 30th of September, to remember the piece of clothing six-year-old Phyllis Webstad had taken from her during her first day at a residential school.
