The Anniversary of the Statute of Westminster is celebrated every year on December 11th. It is a grand celebration in Canada commemorating the momentous changes that The Statute of Westminster brought about in the North American nation. December 11th, 1931, marked the signing of this document that liberated Canada from the rule of the British Crown.

Canada operated as a self-governing nation from 1867, but its independence only officially began in 1931. The Anniversary of The Statute of Westminster remembers the acts and contributions that won full legislative autonomy for the Canadian people. Other nations that are now also autonomous members of the British Crown are Ireland, Australia, Newfoundland, South Africa, and New Zealand.

While not an official holiday, those who celebrate it include the military, government agencies, and Canadian schools that typically create lesson plans around the day’s history.

How To Celebrate the Anniversary of the Statute of Westminster

Today, people celebrate the anniversary by flying both the Union Jack flag and the Maple Leaf flag, side by side. It acknowledges the strong ties between Canada and Britain. Queen Elizabeth II is still the Sovereign of Canada, with her advisors as Federal Ministers of the Crown.

The best way to celebrate this commemorative holiday is to hoist the Union Jack right next to the new Canadian flag. Fly the flags high from sunrise to sundown and delve more into Canada’s history with the British monarchy. If you are a free citizen, you shouldn’t miss the anniversary of the #statuteofwestminster
