Thanksgiving Day in Canada is celebrated on the second Monday of October. It is a statutory holiday except in Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. It is set aside to allow Canadians the opportunity to give thanks for a successful year.

The holiday dates back to when Martin Frobisher, an English explorer, came across the land now known as Canada. Upon his arrival on the continent in 1578, he held a ceremony to give thanks for surviving the voyage, celebrating the day with salt beef and peas. While the day became a nationally recognized holiday in 1879, the holiday’s date has been moved around a few times. It was not until 1957 that the country settled on the current date.

How to Celebrate Thanksgiving Day

Today, people all across Canada celebrate Thanksgiving Day by gathering with friends, family, and loved ones and sharing a Thanksgiving meal. Though this meal often has regional variations, it mainly includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce, among others. Some choose to go on a short autumn vacation, visiting holiday homes and cottages before winter. Fans of the Canadian Football League pass the time by watching classic Thanksgiving Day matches, while others share what they are grateful for on social media using the hashtag #ThanksgivingDay.
