World Mole Day is celebrated on October 23rd to commemorate the mole—not the animal, but the unit of measurement in chemistry. This unit measures the weight of molecules and atoms. More formally, the mole defines substances that have the same amount of components as atoms with 12 grams of carbon-12 molecule.
In chemistry, Avogadro’s number is a dimensionless unit of measure, of which the mole is approximately 6.02×1023. Avogadro’s number is coined after an Italian scientist named Amedeo Avogadro.
Every year on October 23rd, World Mole Day is celebrated from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m. It is very specific, but for good reason! Avogadro's number, as mentioned above, includes the numbers of this specific date and time. This unofficial holiday was created 30 years ago in 1991. Every year, there's a different theme ranging from the Molar Express in 2009 to the Molar Eclipse in 2012.
