The U.S. toy bears derive their name “Teddy” from President Theodore Roosevelt, who declined to shoot a captured bear cub on a hunting expedition in Mississippi in 1902. Soon after, on November 16, 1902, Clifford Berryman published a caricature of the incident in the Washington Post, which instantly became a classic. Subsequent years have seen numerous teddy bears become famous, such as Rupert Bear, Winnie the Pooh, and Paddington Bear.
