Lame Duck Day is celebrated on February 6 every year. Lame Duck Day has nothing to do with ducks, thank goodness—we would never want to celebrate a duck that has met with tragedy and is now lame. Instead, Lame Duck Day is all about politicians and other officials who have reached the end of their terms.

When an elected official has served all the terms they can under the law, they cannot be reelected to the same position. This makes them a “lame duck,” politically. As you can imagine, a “lame duck” cannot get much accomplished if they cannot use their feet, nor can a politician maintain much power when they are on their way out.

The term started initially as a British stock exchange term in the 18th century but took on new meaning in the 19th century in the U.S. when a newspaper used it in 1863 to describe “broken-down politics.” In 1926, the Grand Rapids (Michigan) Press used the term to describe President Calvin Coolidge and how his lack of power made him as valuable as a “lame duck” as he approached the end of his term.
