Sadie Hawkins Day is marked in the United States every year on November 13. The day is inspired by the events of the Li'l Abner comic strip and is a uniquely American holiday that encourages women to ask men out on a date. In the past, a woman who would ask a man out was considered too forward and of low morals. However, American cartoonist Alfred Gerald Caplin, creator of Li'l Abner, changed all that.

In the comic, one of the residents of Dogpatch is concerned about his daughter Sadie Hawkins’s inability to find a suitable husband. He declares Sadie Hawkins Day, where she would be allowed to take control of her dating choice. The comic became so popular that colleges and towns began organizing Sadie Hawkins Day dances where women could ask men out.
