According to Hoyle Day is celebrated every year on August 29 to honor Edmond Hoyle, a lawyer best known not for law but for publishing books explaining the rules of card and board games. Hoyle famously wrote the definitive rules of a card game called Whist. He earned money teaching members of high society how to play Whist and later printed books explaining the rules of the game, in addition to the rules of brag, backgammon, chess, quadrille, and piquet.

Hoyle’s name was so linked to card games that many game rule books used his name on the cover (although he didn’t even write the rules). Today, many people use the phrase “according to Hoyle” when discussing the rules of a certain card game, a new law, or mathematical theory.
