Women’s Equality Day is celebrated on August 26 each year to celebrate women’s equality and the suffrage they faced just to have a voice. It was not that long ago that women did not have the right to vote, own property, or earn as much as men. Their voices were unheard as others ruled on decisions about their lives and bodies. It was not until World War I that the importance women play in our society became apparent, and the long road to women’s rights began to pick up traction. Today, women are still fighting for equal rights and pay. This day remembers the plight of the thousands of women who fought for equal rights.
The first attempt to give women more rights started in 1878, but it was not successful. In 1920, Congress passed the 19th Amendment, which says that a person’s sex will not determine the rights of a citizen. It marks the end of a decades-long battle by tens of thousands of women who fought for their right to have a voice and be heard. In 1973, Women’s Equality Day was signed into law by Congress in a joint resolution declaring August 26 as Women’s Equality Day each year.
