Veterans Day, celebrated on November 11th each year, is a day to honor all military veterans in the United States, including those who died while serving our country and those who are still living. On this day, we are thankful for their service and acknowledge the sacrifices they made without judgment. This federal holiday coincides with Remembrance Day and Armistice Day, which recalls the end of World War I and honors those who served during this time. The United States originally observed Armistice Day but transitioned to celebrating Veterans' Day after 1954.

On Veterans Day, people assemble at a memorial called “The Eternal Flame,” which honors those who died while serving our country. It also marks an eternal flame that has burned at the Tomb of Unknown Soldiers since 1921, commemorating unknown soldiers killed during war or conflict outside United States territory without any identifiable remains. Note that Veterans Day should not be confused with Memorial Day or Armed Forces Day. These two days of observance, although similar, take place earlier in the year in May.

Americans celebrate Veteran’s Day by holding parades, patriotic events, and retail sales. Observe this day by presenting any veterans you know with a military-themed gift like a mini US flag, commemorative pin, or practical gifts like Swiss army knives.
