Umbrella Day is celebrated on February 10 every year. An umbrella is one of those things you take for granted until you do not have one and need one.
The history of the umbrella, or parasol, dates back a long way, with evidence that ancient Mesopotamians used umbrellas made of palm leaves, papyrus, and peacock feathers almost 4000 years ago to shade themselves from the sun. In medieval China, parasols consisted of bamboo sticks, leaves, and feathers.
It was not until the Renaissance that umbrellas became a useful item in Europe as new oiling and waxing technologies for canvas enabled the creation of waterproof personal canopies to protect women from the rain. However, by the 18th century, upper-class men were also adopting this fashion.
The devices became a much-treasured accessory for the wealthy Europeans and Americans not only for their protective value but also for their craftsmanship, with elaborately carved handle designs in wood, gold, and silver.
The modern umbrella really got a boost from Hans Haupt in 1928 when he invented the telescoping umbrella, which made umbrellas much more convenient. Today, umbrellas are inexpensive and a staple for almost every household. Umbrellas today are a universal tool that you can find globally to protect from rain or sun.
