Ride Like the Wind Day is celebrated on August 23 every year to commemorate when the first Kremer prize was awarded to Bryan Allen for his man-powered flight on the Gossamer Condor 2 glider in 1977. Henry Kremer, a British industrialist, first offered the Kremer Prize of £5,000 in 1999 for the first British man-powered aircraft to fly a figure-eight course around two half-mile markers. In 1973 to stimulate more interest, Kremer opened the contest to all nationalities and increased the prize to £50,000.
Flying is a unique pastime; there's nothing that comes close to it. Since Wilbur and Orville Wright made their first plane in 1903, humans have been fascinated with the magic of flying. In summer, when the winds are high, there are plenty of opportunities to test out man-powered aircraft such as pedal-powered planes and gliders.
