Police and Peace Officers National Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Sunday of September each year. The day gives Canadians an opportunity to formally express their appreciation for the dedication and commitment shown by peace and police officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while keeping communities safe.
The Canadian government officially established the day on the 24th of September, 1998. On the 17th of January, 2003, the government included a nationwide half-masting in the half-masting rules. Since then, the flags on all federal establishments and buildings in the country, including the Peace Tower, are half-masted from sunrise to sunset.
