On October 1, 1961, Congress requested President John F. Kennedy to designate May 15th as a day for commemorating peace officers. The following year, President Kennedy issued a declaration for the country to observe Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15th. Americans formally began observing Peace Officers Memorial Day in 1963, several months after President Kennedy signed the bill into law.
