Parent’s Day is celebrated every year on the fourth Sunday in July. Many people already celebrate Mother’s Day in May and Father’s Day in June, but July is for both parents. Young, old, and everything in between, this day recognizes the dedication and hard work that goes into raising a child. Being a parent is one of the most challenging and rewarding jobs a person can have. Some days may feel like they will never end, but one thing is certain: the days are long, but the years are short. For a parent, there is no greater feeling than seeing your child excel and prosper in life.
Parent’s Day came into law in 1994 when Trent Lott introduced Parent’s Day to honor and award outstanding parenting and promote responsibility and positive reinforcement in raising children. It only took a few months for the resolution to pass, and President Bill Clinton signed Parent’s Day into law with the aim of “uplifting, and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children.”
How to Celebrate Parent’s Day
If you are a parent of young children, take a moment and reflect on all that you do for your child. It’s not an easy job, and you should reward yourself for all you do. The Parents Day Council holds a ceremony for the Parents of the Year award that honors parents and their outstanding work raising their children. For children, you can surprise your parents with a visit and a home-cooked meal and remind them how much you appreciate all they continue to do for you on this #ParentsDay.
