Food historians believe they were created in the 1930s in the U.S., but like most foods, other versions of onion rings are popular across the world. In India, their version consists of strips of onion that are battered and fried and then sold street side.

If you think onion rings or strips are the only way to eat these, think again! In the 1980s, a United States chain restaurant created the blooming onion. A whole onion is cut open in the shape of a flower, dipped in batter, then fried to perfection to create this tasty appetizer. Who knew there were so many varieties of onion rings?
