National Gymnastics Day is held annually every third Saturday of September and celebrates a sport the Greeks developed in the 5th century B.C. The day was created in 1998 as a way to promote sports among young people and to honor the sportspeople, teams, and coaches responsible for keeping the gymnastics tradition alive for centuries.
Gymnastics first emerged as a classic sport developed for Greek warriors to exercise, stay healthy, and improve their skills for battle. Today, it’s a popular sport celebrated worldwide, with various competitions and contests held all year round. Did you know that a German educator, Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, was responsible for promoting some of today’s most popular gymnastic routines? Considered the Father of Gymnastics, he perfected many events, including the balance beam, parallel bars, and the ring, that still leave audiences gasping in awe.
