Harriet Tubman Day is celebrated on March 10 each year. It commemorates the life of Harriet Tubman and her incredible anti-slavery activism. Harriet Tubman was born into slavery around 1822. She married a free African-American man named Jon Tubman in 1844 but remained a slave despite her husband’s freedom. Harriet yearned for liberty and tried convincing her husband to escape North, but he refused. She eventually decided to escape slavery with her brothers in 1849, fleeing to the North with dreams of a better life.
Shortly after her escape, Tubman joined an abolitionist movement that helped transport slaves to the northern states. She became a prominent conductor on the Underground Railroad and rescued dozens of African-Americans from slavery. After the Civil War began in 1861, Tubman joined the US Army and served as a nurse, scout, and even a spy. Towards the end of her life, Tubman became a vocal supporter of the women’s rights movement and fought for equality for both women and African-Americans. Sadly, Harriet Tubman died of pneumonia in 1913, leaving behind a powerful legacy that we still honor today.
