Ferris Wheel Day is celebrated on February 14 every year. George Washington Gale Ferris launched the first-ever Ferris wheel in 1893 at the Chicago World’s Fair. It was an instant hit, and people lined up for hours to take a ride on this wonder wheel.
We came close to never getting a Ferris wheel. Safety was a concern with this new amusement ride, and before Mr. Ferris could convince the Fair organizers to sign on for the ride, he had to pay out about $25,000—which was a tremendous cost—for safety studies. He rallied investors, who wound up paying the $600,000 in costs to build the wheel as well as the $25,000.
His hook to get investors interested was simple: “Let's show France a thing or two about ingenuity.” The French had built The Eiffel Tower in 1889, which earned the reputation as one of the “greatest structures ever built.” It held that status until the Ferris Wheel made its debut.
The original Ferris Wheel at the Chicago World’s Fair generated an estimated five million dollars in profits. The massive piece of machinery had 36 cars, and each car could hold up to 60 passengers. That meant that 2,160 people could ride it at one time, and it reportedly carried about 38,000 passengers per day.
Sadly, Mr. Ferris never got to enjoy any of it. He ended up suing the exposition management to try to recover his share of the profits from his engineering feat, but the case was tied up in court for two years until he died penniless at the age of 37.
