Cesar Chavez Day is celebrated on March 31 each year. The holiday pays respect to the civil rights leader Cesar Chavez and everything he accomplished for the labor movement. Cesar Chavez is a Mexican-American activist that fought for migrant workers’ rights during the early and mid-1900s. He started working on farms at ten years old and suffered racial and economic hardship throughout his life.

Once he became an adult, Cesar Chavez dedicated his life to improving migrants’ working conditions, becoming a labor organizer and a civil rights advocate in the Community Service Organization in 1952. Ten years later, Chavez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) with hopes of improving farm workers’ working conditions and pay. The organization rapidly grew, becoming the first successful farmers union in the United States. The NFWA eventually merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee, creating the United Farm Workers of America (UFW) in 1966. Cesar Chavez served as the president of the UFW until he died in 1993. After his death, President Bill Clinton awarded Chavez the Medal of Freedom.
