World Storytelling Day, observed every March 20, celebrates the power of stories to inspire and connect people. Storytelling is as old as human history. In fact, we can't understand the world around us without storytelling. Our brains are wired to understand stories, allowing us to pass on these memories to the next generation.
The first storytelling day was observed in Sweden, and it became an international holiday when storytellers started adopting this new tradition worldwide. On All Narrators' Day, or Alla Berättares Dag (in Swedish), all across the country, children come together for storytelling contests like “knytning” and “sagas,” much in the tradition of their Viking ancestors. Many countries around the world now celebrate World Storytelling Day, including the US.
How to Celebrate World Storytelling Day
The best way to observe this holiday is by telling someone close to you a story, whether it’s a well-known legend or something that happened to you. You could also look for storytelling videos online and share them with friends and family. Another option is to sit with family or friends and take turns telling each person's favorite part of the same tale.
