World Book and Copyright Day was a special day chosen by UNESCO’s General Conference to recognize works of literature, their authors, and the copyright laws that keep them safe. This day hopes to bring awareness to the importance and benefits of reading and enjoying books. It also gives the world a day to celebrate how books have bridged cultures and generations.
World Book and Copyright Day takes place on April 23 because this day marks the death or birth of some of the world’s most well-known authors, including Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Vladimir Nabokov, and William Shakespeare. While they are all great and respected authors, that’s not the only thing they have in common. These authors, and many more, have significantly contributed to society through their work.
How To Celebrate World Book and Copyright Day
Each year, UNESCO holds events to celebrate World Book and Copyright Day. These experiences include workshops on illustrating, bookbinding, creating comic books, and more. Schools may observe this day by having reading competitions and teaching students about copyright laws. You can celebrate this holiday yourself by dressing up as your favorite book character or even donating your old books to libraries or thrift stores.
