Tolkien Reading Day was first envisioned in January 2002 by The Tolkien Society when a New York journalist contacted them asking if there was a day celebrating the prolific author. Unfortunately, there wasn’t, but The Society enjoyed the idea so much that they adopted and scheduled the first public celebration of Tolkien Reading Day on March 25, 2003. The date is also notable because March 25 also symbolizes the fall of Sauron, the series’ most prevalent villain.
