New Year’s Day is celebrated on January 1 each year. It commemorates the beginning of the new calendar year and the Roman God Janus, the God of beginnings and gateways. Countries worldwide celebrate New Year’s Day with elaborate firework displays, parades, and other festive activities, and for many New Year’s Day is a day of recovery from New Year’s Eve celebrations the previous night. New Year's Day is the first national holiday of the year.

The holiday began way back in ancient Rome around 153 BC when the second Roman king, Numa Pontilus, added January and February to the calendar, officially extending a natural year to 12 months. Before King Pontilus created the month of January, most of the western world recognized March 25 as the beginning of the new year (then called the Feast of Annunciation). After Western Europe adopted the Gregorian calendar, March 25 transformed into Lady Day, and January 1 became New Year’s Day. Although most Americans celebrate New Year’s Day by nursing their hangovers, some countries exchange gifts with friends and family or host dinner parties to honor the beginning of the new year.

How To Celebrate New Year’s Day

Celebrating New Year’s Day is quite simple. You can attend special New Year’s Day events like a parade or a football game, host a party, or shoot off a few fireworks. You can even lay around and watch a few festive TV shows if you had a bit too much to drink the night before. For many, this day is symbolic in that it gives us an opportunity to reflect, look back, to assess our accomplishments and failures, and it marks an opportune time to resolve to make positive changes for the future.
