National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is celebrated every year on December 6th. On this day in 1989, a gunman killed fourteen young ladies at Polytechnique Montréal, shedding innocent blood in a spate of violence. This holiday remembers their lives lost so tragically.

Each year, the country sets aside this day to honour those young women and use their tragedy to raise awareness about the violence men are perpetrating against women. The day wants to encourage action within communities to prevent violence, especially at the hands of men against the women in their families and neighbourhoods.

The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women kicks off sixteen days of action in a worldwide movement to support women and girls and keep them safe. Commemorative events happen throughout the commonwealth to spread the word in universities, women’s organizations, and the LGBTQ community.
