Lighthouse Day is celebrated on August 7 each year as an official holiday recognized by the United States Congress dedicated to the lighthouses, buoys, and beacons all over America. The roots of this holiday date back to the late 1700s when Congress passed the Act for the Establishment and Support of Lighthouse, Beacons, Buoys, and Public Piers. Two hundred years later, on August 7, 1989, the country celebrated the first officially designated Lighthouse Day in recognition of the important contributions of lighthouses and lighthouse keepers for maritime navigation and safety.

Lighthouses are some of the most massive installations on American beaches. Even in the age of satellite imaging and GPS technology, freight ships and small boats still rely on lighthouses to guide them away from land. St. Augustine, Florida, is home to the oldest lighthouse in America. Built in 1586, it predates modern ships, fossil fuels, and even the nation itself.

How to Celebrate Lighthouse Day

Lighthouse day can be difficult to celebrate for people who don’t live in coastal areas. If you live near a port or a town by the coast, visit your local lighthouse, which is probably now a historical landmark.
