Labour Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September all over Canada. This date has remained unchanged, though most of the rest of the world celebrates its Labour Day on May 1. You can trace the country’s Labour Day origins back to April 15 in 1872, during the printers’ revolt when Toronto’s labourers attempted to establish a maximum 54-hour workweek and better working conditions.

This attempt led to the imprisonment of 24 leaders of the Toronto Typographical Union. Trade unions were illegal at the time, and the government viewed striking as a criminal conspiracy to hinder trade. However, the Toronto Trades Assembly organized the country’s first significant worker’s rights demonstration. The parades that people held in support of the strike and the Nine-Hour movement led to what is now an annual celebration.

How to Celebrate Labour Day

You can celebrate Labour Day in several ways. For instance, you could attend one of the many picnics and parades that unions organize. Most Canadians view this day as the Monday of summer’s last long weekend, with many families taking it as the last chance to travel before the summer ends and schools resume. With all these options, there is no wrong way to mark this year’s #LabourDay.
