International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated annually on the 11th of October. The day is meant to empower girls and encourage them to amplify their voices and acknowledge their importance, potential, and power. International Day of the Girl Child also allows us to enhance efforts towards eliminating the gender-based challenges girls around the world face, including child marriages, discrimination, violence, and unequal learning opportunities.

The day began as part of Plan International’s campaign designed to nurture girls and promote their rights. Canada formally proposed for the United Nations General Assembly to officially recognize the day. On the 19th of December, 2011, the General Assembly designated the 11th of October, 2012, as the inaugural International Day of the Girl Child.
