Helen Keller Day is celebrated on June 27th each year to commemorate the deaf and blind author and activist. On June 27th, 1980, Jimmy Carter proclaimed Helen Keller’s birthday as Helen Keller Day. Her notable work as a suffragist, activist, and author impacted the lives of women, and especially, those with disabilities. She was the first deaf and blind person to receive a bachelor’s degree in 1904. Despite having disabilities and being a woman in a time when women’s rights were limited, she persevered and became an advocate for all. On this day, the United States and the rest of the world honor Helen Keller’s struggles and accomplishments.
Helen Keller was born on June 27th, 1880 in Alabama. Keller contracted an illness as an infant and became deaf and blind by age two. With the help of her teacher, Anne Sullivan, she learned sign language at a young age. This helped her achieve her goal of obtaining a bachelor’s degree.
