World Freedom Day, observed in the United States and across the world every November 9th, marks the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall was a physical symbol of oppression and tyranny in the Eastern bloc that remained standing for decades. On November 9th, 1989, a crowd gathered to protest the Wall and, in one big push, demolished it into rubble before cheering wildly and embracing each other. This day was first observed in 2001 as proclaimed by President George W. Bush.

Berlin split on ideological differences when American president John F Kennedy visited in 1963 to reaffirm US support for free people everywhere. These powerful words would later provide hope during the Wall's construction ten years later, culminating in its downfall in 1989. Youth groups and activists now see this day as a celebration of victory over oppression.
