National POW/MIA Recognition Day is celebrated every September 17 to honor the Armed Forces members who remain missing or are war prisoners. “You are not forgotten” is the phrase circulating about American loved ones who are still missing in action.
The date isn't associated with any historical event. President Jimmy Carter established the date in 1979. Since that proclamation, a POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony has been held in Washington, D.C. at the Pentagon, featuring law-enforcement officers and high-ranking politicians who come together to honor some of the bravest people from our country.
Ceremonies are also held across the U.S. in state capitals, military installations, schools, and veteran's facilities, as well as ships at sea.
