National Days of Prayer and Remembrance are celebrated every year on the weekend before September 11th, to commemorate the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the worst terrorist attacks in our nation's history. 9/11 was when members of the Islamic group Al-Qaeda hijacked four planes and carried out attacks against the United States. These terrorist-commandeered planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., as well as the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in a Shanksville, Pennsylvania, field that same day.
Years after the tragic events, people gather and lift their hearts in prayer and remembrance of the nearly 3000 innocent victims who lost their lives. In 2002, President Barack Obama proclaimed these national days honoring the heroes who responded to violence and cruelty with compassion and courage.
How to Celebrate National Days of Prayer and Remembrance
Since the 9/11 attacks, generations have come together to honor first responders, service members, and law enforcement officers who stepped up to defend the country and its security. The best way to celebrate these days is to pay tribute to all those who serve as first responders and the brave individuals who sacrificed to make America a stronger country.
On these days, the U.S. flag flies at half-staff. Take a moment of silence. Say a prayer and give thanks to those who fought to make us safer. You can also share the story with your family and friends as you all pray together for the mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters taken two decades ago.
