Indigenous Peoples' Day lands on the same date as Columbus Day, the second Monday of October, but it shifts the focus entirely. Rather than marking Columbus's arrival, it's a day set aside to recognize the Native nations who were already here long before 1492, and to reckon honestly with what colonization cost them.

The idea isn't new, but it's picked up real steam over the last few decades. Berkeley, California was one of the first cities to make the switch back in 1992, and since then dozens of other cities and a growing number of states, including New Mexico, Vermont, Maine, and South Dakota, have followed, either replacing Columbus Day outright or observing both side by side. It's less about erasing history and more about making room for a part of it that got left out for a long time.

How to Celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day

A great way to mark the day is simply learning more about the Native nations connected to the place you live — most people are surprised by how much history is right in their own backyard. It's also a good occasion to explore the contributions Native peoples have made to American life over the centuries, in areas like agriculture, medicine, art, language, and governance, contributions that don't always get their due the rest of the year. Visiting a local museum or cultural center, reading a book by a Native author, or checking out an art market near you are all easy, enjoyable ways to spend the day. If you want to see how others are marking it, #IndigenousPeoplesDay and #NativeAmericansDay are good hashtags to follow.
