World Radio Day is celebrated on February 13 every year. The radio has transformed communication, keeping people in remote places connected, and of course, providing entertainment and news.
However, this holiday is not about celebrating the radio, but instead about how it might be useful to better the world. Unlike the mystery origins of some other holidays, we know who started World Radio Day and why.
The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) started World Radio Day to encourage the use of radio transmissions to share information with, educate, and reach people who depend on radios for communication.
It may seem unthinkable to some of us, but many people in the world do not have a television, do not have internet access, and find themselves excluded from communication beyond their local communities. Since 2012, UNESCO has been encouraging global broadcasters to use the radio to educate and share information to reach those people. UNESCO’s mission is to make information more available via radio transmissions.
How to Celebrate World Radio Day
UNESCO sponsors activities and programs for World Radio Day. See if there is one in your area. If not, talk to local broadcasters about getting involved. Reach out to UNESCO and ask what you can do to help. This is a global initiative, so the more people that get involved, the better. #WorldRadioDay
