World OK Day, a holiday that recognizes the word OK (also spelled O.K. and okay), occurs on March 23. The origins of this word are not clear but may have come about as an abbreviation of the term “orl korrekt,” used extensively in 1800s America to mean “all is all right.” The English language adopted this cryptic spelling to mean everything from acknowledgment and agreement to “okay” or good enough. Nowadays, many other world languages have adopted the word and its meaning. It has gained a universal understanding.

The abbreviation “OK” was first published in the Boston Morning Post on March 23, 1839. It caught on because Martin van Buren used it in his presidential campaign in 1840. Now it is so commonly used that no one remembers its origins as a slang word.
