The Duchess Who Wasn’t Day is celebrated every year on August 27 to honor the life and written work of the famous Irish novelist Margaret Wolfe Hungerford, best known for her book “Molly Bawn.” While the term “Duchess who wasn’t” sounds mysterious, it simply references the pen name, “the Duchess,” that Margaret used to publish over 50 written works between 1877 and 1897.

This holiday celebrates Margaret Wolfe Hungerford and all women throughout history who published their work using pseudonyms. Due to the social constraints and stereotypes of the time, books by female authors were not taken seriously and were either rejected by publishers or did not sell well. Because of this, talented women writers had to publish their written works under different names.

How to Celebrate the Duchess Who Wasn’t Day

Take time on this day to remember the life and works of Margaret Wolfe Hungerford, who, despite the rules, contributed to literature. You can celebrate this holiday by reading any of Hungerford’s books (“Phyllis,” “Faith and Unfaith,” “A Little Rebel,” or “Molly Bawn”) or other books by modern women authors, such as “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Divergent Series,” or “The Hunger Games.” Grab your reading glasses and enjoy #TheDuchessWhoWasn’tDay
