Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 every year. This holiday honors the mathematical value π (rounded to 3.14). Physicist Larry Shaw founded the holiday in 1988, choosing March 14 (or 3/14) was chosen for the date. Archimedes of Syracuse (287–212 BC), one of the founding fathers of mathematics, first calculated the value of pi.
An ancient constant in mathematics, Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Its value lies at approximately 3.14159265. It is an irrational number, meaning that you cannot express it as a whole number, fractional number, or repeated pattern. It will continue infinitely without pattern or repetition when written out on paper. This makes for one awesome mathematical property!
