Macaroon Day is celebrated annually on May 31. These small coconut or almond favored cookies are so flavorful, that a whole day was set aside to celebrate them. These blissful little cookies were originally created in Italy around the 9th century, and eventually made their way to France where they used Almond. In fact, the word macaroon comes from the Italian word maccarone, which means paste.
The American version of the cookie uses shredded coconut and is absolutely delicious! The base ingredients of the unleavened macaroon are egg whites, sugar, and almond paste or coconut, and they can also be topped with jam, chocolate, or fruits in syrup.
